Why We Should Look Beyond the “Famous” for Inspiration
In today’s world, we’re constantly told to find inspiration in the lives of CEOs, entrepreneurs, and globally recognized celebrities. But what if I told you that the person who could inspire you most is sitting right across from you at your desk?
That’s exactly what I realized when I met Jay Chauhan—someone whose story of perseverance, travel, and corporate triumph is just as captivating as any billionaire’s tale, yet it remains largely untold. From humble beginnings to world travels and a career that spans continents, Jay’s journey has inspired me in ways I never expected. And today, I want to share his story with you.
Chapter 1: The Early Years—A Humble Beginning
Jay’s career didn’t begin in a plush office or a high-rise building. In fact, it all started in the UK, where he was working as a restaurant waiter earning less than $8 a day, all while juggling studies in Economics. The year was 1988, and the UK was in the throes of a recession. Jobs were scarce, and people were scrambling to make ends meet. For Jay, this was more than a tough time—it was the foundation that would strengthen his resolve for years to come.
From waiting tables, he pivoted to learning programming languages like C, and soon enough, Jay landed his first job as a computer programmer at Derbyshire Building Society. It didn’t stop there. After stints with British Steel and other companies, he found himself immersed in the world of telecoms—a field that would define his career for decades.
Chapter 2: The Telecom Journey—Living on the Edge
By the time Jay joined Ericsson as a Telecoms Consultant, his world had expanded far beyond the UK. His job wasn’t just about tech—it was about survival, adventure, and immersing himself in some of the most intense and far-flung corners of the world.
Imagine this: you’re in Panama, exploring the Amazonian jungles; a few months later, you’re in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq, being escorted by a bodyguard with an AK-47 in a bulletproof car; then, not long after, you find yourself caught in the middle of the Belgrade War in Serbia. While most people would be terrified, Jay thrived on “living on the edge”—taking everything in stride, no matter where the job took him.
But it wasn’t just about survival. It was the learning, the challenges, and the people he met that truly shaped his career and outlook on life. And those experiences? They gave him a unique perspective that made him one of the most respected consultants in the telecoms industry.
Chapter 3: Africa—Raw Beauty and Frightening Reality
After his time with Ericsson, Jay found himself in Rwanda, taking on a short-term contract for Tigo, a mobile operator. He would never forget the raw beauty of Africa—the landscapes, the wildlife, and the incredible sense of freedom. But there was another side to Africa that Jay got a first-hand look at.
On one hand, he was staying in shared bedrooms and experiencing the terrifying reality of life in some of the country’s roughest areas. On the other hand, there was an adventure around every corner—from gorilla safaris in the misty jungles to witnessing the resilience of a country rebuilding itself.
And, yes, there were also moments of lightness. Like when Jay and his colleagues found solace in a well-stocked office fridge full of beers after a long day of work. It was an experience he wouldn’t trade for anything, and it left him with memories that still influence his outlook on life.
Chapter 4 – India (and love) Calling
Post Africa, Jay found himself back in the UK while contemplating his next move, different path – that led him to India. Jay decided to volunteer for an NGO in Ahmedabad called Asian Foundation for Philanthropy, a complete departure from the corporate world he had known.
At first, the experience was a bit of a culture shock. Gone were the corporate luxuries—Jay found himself living in a basement and sharing cramped living spaces.
And in the midst of this new life, he met someone special—a woman with whom he began a serious relationship. Perhaps, after being through a wild ride, both professionally and personally, India gave him that sense of grounding and nirvana.
Chapter 5 – STC, Lebara & then Virgin Mobile
Buy Jay was not done yet with his Telco work, which till date has remained his first and most intense love! Jay nailed an interview with STC in Bahrain and got the role within two weeks and decided to move to Bahrain. Jay asked his girlfriend to move to Bahrain with him. But she, originally from Nepal, came from a conservative family and her father would not allow her to move out of India without a marriage commitment. Jay was not to be tied down with this situation and that meant a sad ending to a relationship, that unfortunately was never meant to be!
So, Jay did what he knows best – he hit the corporate world like a storm! After four years with STC in Bahrain as Product & Development Manager, Jay bagged a role with Lebara in the UK as the Technical Project Manager for Digital Services deliveries. The interview was a tough one for Jay, but when they asked him if he has experience of dealing with Chinese Vendors (Huawei was soon planning their advent in Telecoms world); Jay had a flashback. When with STC, he had been to China and knew how the Chinese operate – and that convinced Lebara to take Jay onboard!
Jay spent two years at Lebara and then his entry into Virgin Mobile UAE was an interesting one! Jay had made his contacts in the Telecom Industry well and it was through one of his old contacts who had moved to Virgin Mobile UAE, that Jay got through an interview. But it was not smooth sailing – Jay was asked to make a presentation about the “Pros & Cons of a MVNO Start-up”. Jay worked on a Business Case of setting up a Telco start-up and sent that across to the hiring team. It was only after a long wait of more than a month that Jay heard the news that he was moving to Dubai, UAE working as the head of Project Management Office at Virgin Mobile. Jay was part of the original team that launched Virgin Mobile in the UAE and has seen the journey and the growth of the organization from being a start-up with a handful of people in a makeshift office to one of the fastest growing Telcos in the region and arguably the world!
Chapter 6 – The story has just begun!
So, what’s next for Jay? Well, his story is far from over. The man who has seen it all—from the jungles of Panama to the deserts of the Middle East, from corporate boardrooms to shared bedrooms in Africa—isn’t slowing down. In fact, he’s just getting started.
After all, he has seen the birth of “Home Delivery” aka Digital end-to-end Acquisition and the stellar growth of that new-age business. As his journey continues, there’s no telling where it will take him next. But one thing’s for sure: Jay’s story will always be one of persistence, adventure, and unwavering passion for his work.
A Final Thought: Inspiration is All Around Us
So, next time you’re looking for inspiration, remember: it doesn’t always have to come from a global icon or a millionaire CEO. Sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones happening just around the corner, in the lives of the people you work with every day.
Jay’s journey has taught me that success isn’t just about where you end up—it’s about how you get there, the lessons you learn along the way, and the people you meet who make the ride worth it.
So, take a moment to look around you. Who knows? The next great story could be sitting right next to you.
